Staff Consultant Electrical Systems Engineer, Spacecraft Systems

Demonstrated mastery of electrical systems engineering to apply technical standards, principles, and concepts to the design of state-of-the-art Electro-optical Space Payloads. Apply your skills, knowledge, and technical leadership as a subject-matter expert (SME) to guide the development, resolve issues, and provide technical decision-making to support space-based remote sensing and instrument programs. Coach and mentor engineers at all levels and support functional and business unit leadership.

**This position is eligible for a hiring incentive of a minimum of $15,000 for external hires only.

What you’ll do:

  • Architect electrical systems for EO space payloads, and spacecraft bus electronics

  • Oversee detailed design of electrical subsystems including focal planes, instrument control, power management, mechanism control, onboard data processing, and electrical harnessing.

  • Lead system trade studies to identify and mitigate technical risks early in the design phase

  • Write specifications and define requirements flow down to electrical subsystems

  • Push new technology development to enable discriminating performance and capabilities

  • Lead resolution of hardware anomalies at the system level and determine root cause and corrective action.

  • Support proposals and new business development

  • Engage with internal and external customers through presentations and written communication.

  • Maintain a regular and predictable work schedule.

  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships within the department, the Strategic Business Units, Strategic Support Units and the Company. Interact appropriately with others in order to maintain a positive and productive work environment.

  • Perform other duties as necessary.

What you’ll need:

  • BS degree or higher in Engineering or a related technical field is required plus 16 or more years of related experience.

  • Each higher-level degree, i.e., Master’s Degree or Ph.D., may substitute for two years of experience. Related technical experience may be considered in lieu of education. Degree must be from a university, college, or school which is accredited by an agency recognized by the US Secretary of Education, US Department of Education.

  • Demonstrated experience architecting complex electrical systems including subsystem design trades, performance modeling, and component trades

  • Detailed electronics design experience for space-flight applications

  • Broad electrical design experience with applications such as focal planes, sensors, mechanisms, analog design, digital design, algorithms, and data processing (experience with focal planes and imaging systems is highly preferred)

  • Experience defining electrical requirements decomposition, allocation and flow down.

  • Experience with designing to meet EMI/EMC/ESD requirements for space applications

  • Experience with failure analysis, root cause and corrective action

  • Analytical experience with TOR-level design standards including WCA and Parts Stress is preferred

  • Exceptional written communication skills, strong presentation skills and the ability to lead discussions with customers and team members.

  • Current Top Secret/SCI security clearance preferred.

Working Conditions:

  • Work is performed in an office, laboratory, production floor, or clean room, outdoors or remote research environment.

  • May occasionally work in production work centers where use of protective equipment and gear is required.

  • May access other facilities in various weather conditions.

  • Travel and local commute between Ball campuses and other possible non-Ball locations may be required.

Security Clearance:

Successful applicant for this position must be eligible to obtain a DoD clearance or government customer access to classified/sensitive material. A current DoD clearance is not required to be eligible for this position, however the successful applicant will be required to obtain a DoD clearance or government customer access within a reasonable time after the offer is extended and must be able to maintain the applicable clearance. *US Citizenship is Required.
