Engineer II – Material Handling

At the Ball Aerospace Westminster Colorado location, we develop and manufacture state-of-the art RF & sensor technology hardware that are integrated onto tactical missile and aircraft platforms. If you’d like to join our rapidly growing operations team in a mission to help the warfighter, this could be an ideal role for you. The Material Handling Engineering role is a new discipline we’re adding to our team. The position is focused on development of a factory wide material handling strategy and standardized system to assure safe and efficient handling of raw materials, in process hardware, and final products. The position will require an individual with directly relevant industry experience to develop a standardized system of managing materials throughout their production life cycle; work with value stream personnel to identify and reduce risk; and design/implement appropriate solutions that support our operational strategic goals. This opportunity requires a visionary, results driven individual to solve system challenges in direct support of the Tactical Solutions (TS) Strategic Business Unit (SBU).

What you’ll do:

  • Drive the development and execution of a factory- wide material handling strategy focused on human and hardware safety.

  • Continuously improve the presentation and handling of parts and materials to the point-of-use using industry best practices.

  • Contribute to more efficient material flow throughout the factory.

  • Create and maintain a Plan for Every Part (PFEP).

  • Identify IT solution projects to improve the flow and tracking of materials within the factory.

  • Participate in product work cell designs and layouts for factory optimization and expansions.

  • Optimize material storage locations through innovative layout designs and storage methods.

  • Work closely with Manufacturing & Industrial Engineering regarding facilities layouts, material flow plans, and the design and implementation of a production leveling system (Heijunka).

  • Support batch size reductions through the use and design of a flexible material handling system.

  • Lead teams through problem resolution, collective brainstorming, and design projects to address risk reduction to materials and hardware.

  • Utilize a Lean coaching approach (respect for people, “go and see” behavior, put problems first, and continuously intensify collaboration).

  • Generate strong relationships with material / manufacturing planners and supply chain personnel.

  • Demonstrate industry best practices in utilizing Lean Manufacturing “tools” (value stream mapping, 5S, etc.) while performing the Material Handling Role.

  • Maintain a strong focus on human and hardware safety, and education of best practices for the Material Handling discipline.

  • Maintain a regular and predictable work schedule.

  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships within the department, the Strategic Business Units, Strategic Support Units and the Company. Interact appropriately with others in order to maintain a positive and productive work environment.

  • Perform other duties as necessary.

What you’ll need:

  • BS degree or higher in Engineering or a related technical field is required plus 5 or more years related experience.

  • Each higher-level degree, i.e., Master’s Degree or Ph.D., may substitute for two years of experience. Related technical experience may be considered in lieu of education. Degree must be from a university, college, or school which is accredited by an agency recognized by the US Secretary of Education, US Department of Education.

  • Degree in Packaging, Manufacturing, or Industrial Engineering preferred.

  • Experience developing and maintaining strong internal customer relationships.

  • A creative approach to problem solving and an appetite for experimentation.

  • Strong presentation skills.

  • Strong skills with AutoCAD, SolidWorks, Excel, and PowerPoint. Simulation experience is desired.

  • Experience leading teams and projects highly desired.

  • Experience of implementation and sustainment of ISO 9001 certification highly desired.

Working Conditions:

  • Work is performed in an office, laboratory, production floor, or clean room, outdoors or remote research environment.

  • May occasionally work in production work centers where use of protective equipment and gear is required.

  • May access other facilities in various weather conditions.

  • Travel and local commute between Ball campuses and other possible non-Ball locations may be required.

Security Clearance:

Successful applicant for this position must be eligible to obtain a DoD clearance or government customer access to classified/sensitive material. A current DoD clearance is not required to be eligible for this position, however the successful applicant will be required to obtain a DoD clearance or government customer access within a reasonable time after the offer is extended and must be able to maintain the applicable clearance. *US Citizenship is Required.
