Ball Aerospace is a prime contractor leading development teams at AFRL and NASIC. Dayton personnel develop advanced hardware and software systems and provide management services to solve customer problems and create new capabilities. Software Engineer I – Embedded Software Development (666687)

In this position, you will work with our avionics cyber team to develop critical cyber security capabilities for avionics systems. This team develops technologies for cyber assessment, mitigations, protections, and revolutionary new avionics architectures for inherently secure platforms. We are looking for engineers with embedded/low level development experience to join our team and make a significant impact in the future of cyber security in cyber physical systems (CPS) such as avionics. Projects range from research/development of new innovative technologies, to the transition of mature cyber technologies to selected systems.

What You’ll Do:

  • Work with customer and team members to understand project requirements and scope.

  • Work with team of engineers to perform cyber vulnerability assessments, develop cyber mitigations, and develop next generation avionics systems

  • Develop/modify embedded software for avionics and related systems.

  • Develop custom tools or applications for reverse engineering, cyber vulnerability assessment, mitigations

  • Perform full software life cycle functions including software/firmware requirements, architecture, design, code, test, integration and documentation.

  • Maintain a regular and predictable work schedule.

  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships within the team. Interact appropriately with others in order to maintain a positive and productive work environment.

  • Perform other duties as necessary.

What You’ll Need:

  • BS in Computer Engineering or a related technical field is required plus 2 or more years’ related experience.

  • Successful applicant must be eligible to obtain and maintain an active security clearance

  • Experience developing, integrating, and testing low level or embedded software. Avionics experience a plus.

  • Experience programming in C/C++.

  • Experience programming assembly language, preferably PowerPC, x86, and/or ARM.

  • Experience developing boot loaders, device drivers, board support packages, kernel level development, etc

  • Experience using tools such as IDAPro, JTAG, and disassemblers.

  • Experience with formal software development processes.

  • Excellent technical writing and team skills.

  • In addition, these will set you apart:

  • Experience with real-time operating systems including Green Hills Integrity, VxWorks, QNX, embedded Linux, or other RTOS

  • Experience developing machine emulators

  • Embedded avionics experience

  • Current Secret or higher DoD clearance

  • Familiarity with DO-178B.

  • In addition to the typical educational and experience requirements, a demonstrated capability to perform the essential functions and responsibilities of the position and to exhibit the skills and competencies of the grade level will be considered. Each higher-level degree, i.e., Master’s Degree or Ph.D., may substitute for two years of experience. Related technical experience may be considered in lieu of education. Degree must be from a university, college, or school which is accredited by an agency recognized by the US Secretary of Education, US Department of Education.

Working Conditions:

  • Work is performed in an office, laboratory, production floor, or clean room, outdoors or remote research environment.

  • May occasionally work in production work centers where use of protective equipment and gear is required.

  • May access other facilities in various weather conditions.

  • Travel and local commute between Ball campuses and other possible non-Ball locations may be required.

  • Occasional out of state travel and local commute between Ball and customer facilities will be required
