Engineer I - Modeling and Characterization (668343)

What you'll do:

  • Characterize the performance of existing, planned, or hypothetical remote sensing systems.

  • Relate sensor characteristics to the performance of automated and manual detection, tracking, classification, and characterization algorithms.

  • Design optimal sensor configuration and collection strategies.

  • Provide maintenance and sustainment of modeling and simulation applications.

  • Recommend improvements, enhancements, and extensions to existing models to meet emerging needs.

  • Develop tools and approaches to perform analysis and interpret the results of trade studies.

  • Develop, enhance, evaluate, and integrate scientific and statistical algorithms in high-level scientific computing languages.

  • Provide specific technical expertise performing mid-level analytical assignments across several tasks of moderate complexity.

  • Apply and interpret standard engineering or scientific theories, concepts, and techniques.

  • Develop solutions to problems where established theories and techniques can be identified, and some precedent exists for procedures to be used.

  • Determine your own approach to problem solving and devise solutions in coordination with senior staff members.

  • Document research through technical reports and papers.

  • Share your findings with peers and the customer by developing and delivering briefings on your findings and accomplishments.

  • Collaborate in an R&D team environment.

  • Maintain a regular and predictable work schedule.

  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships within the department, the Strategic Business Units, Strategic Support Units and the Company. Interact appropriately with others in order to maintain a positive and productive work environment.

  • Perform other duties as necessary.

What you'll need:

  • BS degree or higher in Engineering or a related technical field is required plus 2 or more years related experience.

  • Each higher-level degree, i.e., Master’s Degree or Ph.D., may substitute for two years of experience. Related technical experience may be considered in lieu of education. Degree must be from a university, college, or school which is accredited by an agency recognized by the US Secretary of Education, US Department of Education.

  • Degree in Physics, Mathematics, Electrical Engineering, or Software Engineering is preferred.

  • Strong physical science and math foundation

  • Effective communication skills

  • Proficiency with scientific and engineering programming in languages such as Matlab, Interactive Data Language (IDL), or Python

  • Interest in learning modern programming languages (e.g., C++) and approaches (e.g., event driven architectures) and interfacing with software development teams

Working Conditions:

  • Work is performed in an office, laboratory, production floor, or clean room, outdoors or remote research environment.

  • May occasionally work in production work centers where use of protective equipment and gear is required.

  • May access other facilities in various weather conditions.

  • Travel and local commute between Ball campuses and other possible non-Ball locations may be required.
