Job Duties:

Primary Purpose of Position:

Under the supervision of the Tax Manager – State and Local Tax Administration, the Tax Supervisor supervises state and local staff; prepares and reviews various state income and franchise tax filings; assists with financial statement reporting related to state income and franchise tax; researches and analyzes a wide range of tax issues; assists with tax planning opportunity identification and implementation; keeps up-to-date on current tax practices and technical issues; develops a working knowledge of the company’s business and tax systems; contributes to the successful completion of projects.

Essential Functions:

  • Researches and analyzes a wide range of direct and indirect state income and franchise tax issues and assists in the documentation of conclusions and the related impacts on compliance and reporting.

  • Assists in the identification and execution of tax planning opportunities.

  • Supervises and mentors state and local staff.

  • Performs a detailed review of income and franchise state tax return filings and related work papers, including apportionment, state modifications, nexus, unitary filings, and flow-through taxation.

  • Assists with state income and franchise tax returns.

  • Performs a detailed review of required income and franchise state tax estimated payments.

  • Assists with the quarterly and year-end income tax provision process, including preparation and review of state provision calculations, support, and analysis.

  • Assists with other state and local tax projects including but not limited to research and writing related to audit defense; due diligence; restructuring; sales and use, excise, and Canadian transaction taxes; review of property tax returns; tax implications of sale and purchase transactions; and other indirect taxation.

  • Serves as a liaison between the corporate office, subsidiaries, divisions, and plants in matters relating to the above taxes and as directed by the manager, state and local tax administration.

  • Supervises tax consultants and interns on assigned projects, including income and franchise tax, sales and use tax, and property tax.

  • Identifies opportunities to improve operational efficiency and streamline work flow.

  • Effectively communicates state and local tax guidance to internal and external stakeholders.

Position Requirements:

  • Broad training in a related field usually acquired through college level education in accounting, finance, or work-related experience

  • Job related experience for 5-7 year(s) minimum in state income and franchise tax

  • Certifications/Licenses/Other: CPA preferred

  • Preparation and review experience of state income and franchise tax returns

  • Experience with state tax planning, tax research, and tax analysis

  • Previous Big 4 or large CPA firm experience

  • Excellent research and writing skills

  • 5% of travel
