Engineering Manager I

To manage engineering disciplines, including the technical and clerical support functions, and assure adequate staffing through hiring, recruiting, & skill set alignment with program needs.

What you’ll do:

  • Lead the hiring effort of various engineering disciplines (radiation, EEE Parts, reliability and project engineers) for a rapidly growing department and company.

  • Determine personnel loading needs throughout the company and help determine needed skill sets.

  • Work with program staff (such as the Mission Assurance Manager and/or Program Manager) to estimate the support and staff programs.

  • Select, motivate and counsel employees; administer salary and budget programs; ensure employee safety; plan, organize, integrate and measure work performed within the department. To encompass developing metrics that can gauge work and associated performance.

  • Develop staffing requirements and tasks from program schedule and assign staff as required to support program schedules.

  • Monitor engineering work and design and resolve engineering problems with program or customer management. Ensure all customer requirements are met.

  • Ensure that all business is conducted using the highest ethical standards and in compliance with all applicable laws, statues, and regulations as well as company policies and directives.

  • Work with Subject Matter Expert (SME) staff to conceive and develop solutions to engineering management and technical problems.

  • Implement Systems Assurance CONOPS for staffing working with Design Assurance & MAM interaction or other means.

  • Contribute to department process improvement and maintenance and if necessary conduct or ensure team is properly engaged.

  • Enhance and support methods used to execute work through internal and external means; help establish ground rules when internal or external resources should be leveraged for completing work tasks.

  • Demonstrate strong responsiveness to department processes, functions, work products, and commitment to meeting program needs.

  • Maintain a regular and predictable work schedule.

  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships within the department, the Strategic Business Units, Strategic Support Units and the Company. Interact appropriately with others in order to maintain a positive and productive work environment.

  • Perform other duties as necessary.

What you’ll need:

  • BS/BA in related field plus 10 years or more related experience.

  • Each higher-level degree, i.e., Master’s Degree or Ph.D., may substitute for two years of experience. Related technical experience may be considered in lieu of education. Degree must be from a university, college, or school which is accredited by an agency recognized by the US Secretary of Education, US Department of Education.

  • Familiarity with reliability, radiation effects, and/or electronic parts engineering disciplines and/or system engineering in the Aerospace industry is desired.

  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.

  • Excellent skills in negotiation and guiding diverse groups of people, providing vision and solutions, and leading groups to understanding and consensus.

  • Proven collaborative leadership skills.

  • Ability to effectively interact with customers and governmental figures at all levels.

  • Willingness to travel.

Working Conditions:

  • Work is performed in an office, laboratory, production floor, or clean room, outdoors or remote research environment.

  • May occasionally work in production work centers where use of protective equipment and gear is required.

  • May access other facilities in various weather conditions.

  • Travel and local commute between Ball campuses and other possible non-Ball locations may be required.
