Senior R&D Systems Engineer

What you'll do:

  • Systems of interest will focus on laser technology and associated diagnostics and infrastructure.

  • Conceive and develop overarching solutions through the application of industry-wide accepted system engineering techniques, practices and procedures to meet system design requirements for intended environment and application.

  • Conduct trade studies to evaluate strengths and drawbacks of various design approaches to meeting project goals.

  • Ensure engineering designs and solutions meet all project or contract requirements through engineering analysis.

  • Initiate and manage configuration control for development of systems and associated documentation.

  • Review drawings, procedures, engineer orders for completeness, compatibility, producibility, and correctness.

  • Compile and evaluate design and data to determine adequacy and completeness of system under development to meet intended performance goals.

  • Develop and maintain systems requirements, design documentation and integrated master schedules.

  • Provide detailed documentation for systems engineering, risk reduction and related activities.

  • Provide guidance and feedback to more junior engineers to promote their technical development and enhance team unity.

  • Coordinate and collaborate with scientific research staff that is contributing to system design through experimentation, high-fidelity computational modeling, and other activities to reduce design risks, optimize design features, or verify critical design aspects.

  • Organize, analyze, write and present technical briefings for informal internal design reviews and formal external design reviews (e.g., PDRs and CDRs).

  • Communicate with customers directly as the subject matter expert or spokesperson on the project or program. Acts as advisor to management and customer on key issues associated with the system design.

  • Formulate experimental or modeling requirements to develop or validate system design aspects.

  • Track design performance against costs, budgets and schedules.

  • Participate in proposal development as required.

  • Follow Department of Defense procedures for the proper usage and safeguarding of classified information.

  • Maintain a regular and predictable work schedule.

  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships within the department, the Strategic Business Units, Strategic Support Units and the Company. Interact appropriately with others in order to maintain a positive and productive work environment.

  • Perform other duties as necessary.

What you'll need:

  • BS degree or higher in Engineering or a related technical field is required, plus 8 or more years of related experience performing system engineering activities. An advanced degree is preferred.

  • Each higher-level degree, i.e., Master’s Degree or Ph.D., may substitute for two years of experience. Related technical experience may be considered in lieu of education. Degree must be from a university, college, or school which is accredited by an agency recognized by the US Secretary of Education, US Department of Education.

  • Demonstrated experience in system engineering for DoD military systems.

  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DoD Top Secret security clearance.

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.

Working Conditions:

  • Work is performed in an office, laboratory, production floor, or clean room, outdoors or remote research environment.

  • May occasionally work in production work centers where use of protective equipment and gear is required.

  • May access other facilities in various weather conditions.

  • Travel and local commute between Ball campuses and other possible non-Ball locations may be required.

Security Clearance:

Successful applicant for this position must be eligible to obtain a DoD clearance or government customer access to classified/sensitive material. A current DoD clearance is not required to be eligible for this position, however the successful applicant will be required to obtain a DoD clearance or government customer access within a reasonable time after the offer is extended and must be able to maintain the applicable clearance. *US Citizenship is Required.
