Research & Development Engineer - Principal

What you'll do:

  • Engineering activities will be focused on, but not limited to, research development associated with laser technology (e.g., thermal management, opto-mechanical, controls, electrical distribution) and associated integration onto operating platforms. Other engineering area may include development of diagnostic equipment and test-related hardware.

  • Conceive and develop solutions to unusually complex engineering problems through the application of scientific principles and industry-wide accepted engineering techniques, practices and procedures.

  • Perform a commensurate level of systems engineering activities (derive, flow down and track requirements, or track performance against TPMs) to facilitate a discipline and traceable development and management of R&D technology.

  • Ensure the producibility of designs. Compile and evaluate design and data to determine adequacy and completeness of designs/products and the engineering effectiveness of the results compared to requirements and specifications.

  • Design, perform and evaluate experimental or test activities to reduce risk, optimize designs for intended application or demonstrate performance meets requirements specification.

  • Develop requirements, review documents/drawings, and other system integration products for integration of components into subsystems and systems.

  • Research technology through literature searches, meetings with vendors, and conference attendance to maintain state-of-the-art awareness of relevant technology for business area.

  • Review drawings, procedures and engineering orders for completeness, compatibility, producibility, and correctness.

  • Utilize custom and industry-wide accepted engineer tools to perform a variety of engineering and engineering management tasks.

  • Establish good working relationships with suppliers and Ball supply chain management staff.

  • Lead, plan, coordinate, track (e.g., financial and schedule) and manage assigned projects.

  • Lead and/or coordinate with multi-disciplinary electrical, software, thermal, optical, mechanical and other subsystem teams to ensure they meet overall integration and performance requirements.

  • Coordinate and collaborate with scientific research staff to reduce design risks, optimize design features, or verify critical design aspects.

  • Organize, analyze, write and present technical briefings for informal internal design reviews and formal external design reviews (e.g., PDRs and CDRs).

  • Communicate with customers directly as the subject matter expert or spokesperson on assigned projects or program. Act as advisor to management and customer on key issues associated with assigned projects or program.

  • Promote development of strong teams by participation in key aspects of the project and mentoring more junior team members. When delegating, establish clear expectations by providing well-defined tasks with clear entrance/exit criteria, due dates and associated budgets.

  • Follow Department of Defense procedures for the proper usage and safeguarding of classified information.

  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships within the department and customer base. Interact appropriately with others in order to maintain a positive and productive work environment.

  • Maintain a regular and predictable work schedule.

  • Perform other duties as necessary.

What you'll need:

  • BS degree or higher in Engineering or Science plus 12 or more years of related experience.

  • Each higher-level degree, i.e., Master’s Degree or Ph.D., may substitute for two years of experience. Related technical experience may be considered in lieu of education. Degree must be from a university, college, or school which is accredited by an agency recognized by the US Secretary of Education, US Department of Education.

  • Advanced degree preferred.

  • Demonstrated experience in research and development

  • Experience with systems engineering activities

  • Excellent organizational and coordination skills.

  • Demonstration of excellent written and oral communication skills.

Working Conditions:

  • Work is performed in an office, laboratory, production floor, or clean room, outdoors or remote research environment.

  • May occasionally work in production work centers where use of protective equipment and gear is required.

  • May access other facilities in various weather conditions.

  • Travel and local commute between Ball campuses and other possible non-Ball locations may be required.

Security Clearance:

Successful applicant for this position must be eligible to obtain a DoD clearance or government customer access to classified/sensitive material. A current DoD clearance is not required to be eligible for this position, however the successful applicant will be required to obtain a DoD clearance or government customer access within a reasonable time after the offer is extended and must be able to maintain the applicable clearance. *US Citizenship is Required.
