Ball Aerospace's Albuquerque office, located near Kirtland Air Force Base NM, is a key provider of technical services to the Air Force Research Laboratory Directed Energy and Space Vehicles directorates. Our multi-discipline staff provides a broad range of scientific and engineering services, including laboratory and field experiments, technology assessments, modeling & simulation, and analyses. What You’ll Do:

Perform complex laboratory technician functions associated with a research laboratory involving high energy lasers. Duties are typically more responsibility oriented (versus daily task oriented), performed with goal objectives provided from engineers, scientists or managers and little to no oversight or prioritization. Assignments are typically complex in nature, and vary greatly in breadth and depth of content during day-to-day operations. Job duties can include the following:

  • Lead a small group in the effort to maintain the laboratory facility to meet or exceed Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) and Ball Aerospace quality assurance (QA) requirements by maintaining calibration and maintenance schedules, and positively tracking high value assets.
  • Coordinate the efforts of a team of technicians and/or outside contractors to upgrade/improve laboratory facilities.
  • Implement EHS processes and procedures; recognize safety hazards, including hazardous materials, and pursue corrective action when necessary.
  • Participate in laboratory set-up, test execution, and other test related laboratory functions; For example, alignment and use/operation of laser optics and high energy lasers.
  • Participate in set-up, alignment, inspection, and maintenance of optical beam trains to support laser experiments.
  • Utilize laboratory experience including use of standard laboratory instrumentation such as digital multi-meters, oscilloscopes, power supplies, general optical bench equipment, and data-acquisition hardware/software to conduct experiments and collect data.
  • Conduct cursory analyses of data using basic math skills.
  • Review and accurately interpret and implement schematics, drawings, specifications, and procedures as required.
  • Provide advanced instruction and training on specialized procedures and techniques to other employees, and may develop processes and procedures essential to departmental compliance.
  • Fabricate, test and/or troubleshoot prototype and breadboard electronics, hardware and software applications, or data-acquisition and control hardware/software.
  • Provide detailed written documentation as required to meet contractual obligations and supplement standard laboratory documentation.
  • Make continuous improvement suggestions, participate and lead projects in areas of responsibility.
  • Plan and commit resources, coordinate and lead the work of lower level employees to assure task completion.
  • Effective communications and regular interaction with higher level management and customers.
  • Cross-train with other tasks across the organization.
  • Maintain a regular and predictable work schedule, while being flexible enough to work with changing customer requirements.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships within the Company and the government customer. Interact appropriately with others to maintain a positive and productive work environment.
  • Perform other duties as necessary.

What You’ll Need:

  • High school diploma and 14 or more years or a 2-year technical degree with 12 or more years of experience required, or a related 2-year technical degree and 12 years or more of related experience.
  • Each higher-level degree, i.e., Master’s Degree or Ph.D., may substitute for two years of experience. Related technical experience may be considered in lieu of education. Degree must be from a university, college, or school which is accredited by an agency recognized by the US Secretary of Education, US Department of Education.
  • Must have strong documentation skills, organization skills, and the ability to interact with team members cross-functionally.
  • Must have strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Experience working in and maintaining cleanroom facilities and ESD sensitive device workstations is highly desirable.
  • An evident history as a self-starter with a self-driven work ethic and willingness to learn-on-the-fly and succeed in a fast paced and dynamic environment.
